Keeping Humanity Alive: Celebrating World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2025

Today, May 8th, the world unites to celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day!

It's a day dedicated to recognizing the incredible impact of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and the millions of volunteers and staff who tirelessly work to alleviate human suffering across the globe.

This significant date marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the Swiss visionary whose profound experience witnessing the horrors of the Battle of Solferino in 1859 sparked the idea for a neutral organization dedicated to caring for the wounded in wartime.

His vision led to the formation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and laid the foundation for the global humanitarian network we know today.

The core principles championed by Dunant – Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality – remain the guiding stars of the Movement.

These principles ensure that aid is provided to those in need, regardless of their nationality, race, religious beliefs, social status, or political affiliations.

This year's powerful theme, "Keeping Humanity Alive," underscores the enduring commitment of the Red Cross and Red Crescent to protect life and dignity, especially in the face of escalating global challenges.

From the devastating consequences of armed conflict and natural disasters to the ongoing struggles against health crises and social inequalities, the Movement stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is a truly global force, comprising three distinct yet interconnected parts:

  • The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC): The guardian of International Humanitarian Law, the ICRC works in conflict zones and other situations of violence to protect and assist victims, promote humanitarian principles, and prevent suffering.
  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC): The IFRC coordinates and supports the activities of the 191 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in responding to disasters and health emergencies in non-conflict situations, as well as promoting community health and well-being.
  • National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies: These vital organizations operate within their own countries, providing a wide range of services tailored to local needs, from disaster relief and first aid training to blood donation programs and social care initiatives.

On World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we not only celebrate the remarkable achievements of this global network but also reflect on how we can each contribute to upholding humanitarian values in our own lives and communities.

Even small acts of kindness, empathy, and support can make a significant difference.
